HOW GPS SATELLITES COULD HELP PREVENT AUTO ACCIDENTS

Published by admin under Car GPS Navigation News

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 8, 2009 – A groundbreaking research project by Ford Motor Company and Auburn University shows that global positioning system (GPS) satellites that can “talk” to cars could help prevent serious accidents in the future.

The research findings will be presented next week at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ International Conference on [...]

Published by Michelle under Car GPS Navigation News

CNN News
Sales under the U.S. government’s “cash for clunkers” auto incentive topped 180,000 with Toyota Motor Corp overtaking Ford Motor Co with the top-selling vehicle, officials said Wednesday.
More than 80 percent of vehicles traded-in were light trucks, including sport utilities, pickups and vans, while 59 percent of the new vehicles purchased were passenger cars, which as a class are more fuel efficient.
Toyota’s Corolla sedan overtook the Ford Focus as the best-selling vehicle in the “clunker” program. Toyota had two other passenger cars, the Prius hybrid and the Camry, in the top five. The Honda [...]

GPS guides tourists into ghetto

Published by Michelle under Car GPS Navigation News

Three Norwegian tourists came under fire and one was shot after the satellite navigation system in their car guided them straight into one of Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous slums.
The three men cut short their vacation in Brazil and headed home after Trygve Killingtveit, 24, was shot in the shoulder by suspected drug traffickers from one of the gangs that control hundreds of shantytowns in Rio.
The tourists were returning from the beach resort of Buzios about three hours north of Rio Saturday when they got lost, Brazil’s Globo TV and several newspapers reported.
They reportedly told police their Global Positioning System [...]

Porsche to become 10th VW brand

Published by Michelle under Car GPS Navigation News

Porsche chief Wendelin Wiedeking resigned Thursday, paving the way for a takeover of the luxury German sports carmaker by
Volkswagen.
The VW supervisory board is expected to agree, in principle, Thursday to a two-step 8-billion-euro takeover of Porsche after the legendary sports car group agreed on Wiedeking’s departure during an all-night session in Stuttgart.
The prospect of VW now seizing control of Porsche signals an end to the sports carmaker’s long cherished independence, with 56-
year-old Wiedeking having lost out in a protracted power struggle with Volkswagen, which is Europe’s biggest carmaker.
It also means that Volkswagen has turned the tables on the highly indebted [...]

GPS out-smarts Humans?

Published by admin under Car GPS Navigation News

GPS systems will soon include technology that bases directions on traffic patterns and weather forecasts.
GPS systems are about to get a whole lot smarter.
A new generation of navigation systems will include more than directions, reports MSNBC. Drivers will have access to “situational” information, including traffic patterns, weather forecasts and driving restrictions.
Thilo Koslowski, automative analyst for technology consultant, Gartner, Inc., told MSNBC that current GPS systems leave a lot to be desired. According to Koslowski, car companies such as Jaguar, Mazda and Land Rover have chosen to leave some roads out of their navigation systems because they have specific [...]
